On the Other Side of Obedience

Have you ever stepped out of what is familiar, or made a major change in simple obedience to God’s prodding? You have no idea what is ahead of you, but you feel confident that God has directed you and you must follow through. If you have, you are not alone in your obedience to God and your pursuit of Him. Abraham understood the gravity of obedience and had no idea what would be on the other side. He left his home country, began a huge journey with all of his family and flocks in tow, not knowing where he would end up. But, without a doubt God directed His steps and lead him to a great place.

“It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home and go to another land that God would give him as his inheritance.  He went without knowing where he was going.”  Hebrews 11:8 NLT

God promised that if Abraham obeyed, He would make him a great nation, he would be blessed of God with increase, and his name would become known and appreciated by many nations. What a great promise! But, it took blind faith and the daily walking in obedience to receive that promise.

What is God asking you to do that takes faith, maybe even blind faith, and an act of obedience to fulfill?  If you ask God to confirm His instruction and you know in your heart God has spoken, I believe that just as God blessed Abraham and lead him faithfully, He will do the same for you.

Again, Abraham was approached by God with a word of instruction…this one was more difficult than all of the other requests put together. “Take your son, your only son, whom you love – Isaac – and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burn offering on a mountain I will show you” Genesis 22:2. Abraham followed what God asked him to do even though it wasn’t easy. His response was obedience. Abraham couldn’t see God’s plan at the time of his obedience, but God had a ram waiting on the other side of that mountain. In the end, what God had asked of him changed. But, once he proved his willingness to obey and followed after God, he was shown a better plan…right at the last moment.

“Because you have obeyed me and have not withheld even your son, your only son, I swear by my own name that I will certainly bless you…And through your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed – all because you have obeyed me.” Genesis 22:16 & 18.

God often reveals His plan just as we are in the midst of obedience.  But, unless we take the first step and do what we are asked, we might miss the provision God has for us on the other side of our mountain.  What does God have for us on the other side of our obedience?  We will never know unless we take the first step. I am stepping out in faith…what about you?

What’s on the other side of your obedience?
